Women always strive to look beautiful, even during exercise. While some prefer to exercise with makeup on, experts emphasize the importance of cleansing the skin before workouts.
For some women, applying a bit of foundation before hitting the gym might seem appealing, but according to a recent study, keeping your face clean during exercise is crucial.
Recent research warns that makeup can clog pores and hinder your skin from breathing properly.
The study involved 43 healthy university students, including 20 men and 23 women.
One side of their faces (forehead and upper cheek) was applied with foundation, while the other side remained clean.
A skin analysis device was used to closely examine the skin before and after a 20-minute treadmill run.
Researchers discovered an increase in moisture in both makeup-free and made-up areas after exercise.
Experts suggest that using foundation during exercise can reduce skin oil and lead to dryness. Therefore, it’s recommended to go to the gym with a clean, makeup-free face.
Post-exercise, pores enlarged on makeup-free skin, whereas there was not a significant increase in pores on the made-up side, indicating that applying foundation could indeed clog pores.
Meanwhile, oil levels increased on areas without makeup and decreased on areas with makeup. This suggests that maintaining an appropriate oil level with makeup during exercise might be challenging.
Researchers from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology stated, “There is an increasing trend of individuals using cosmetics before physical activity. This can lead to reduced skin oil during exercise, potentially causing dryness. Additionally, makeup can clog pores and increase sebum production. This research provides valuable insights, encouraging individuals to consider the possible consequences of wearing makeup during exercise.”
Dongsun Park, the lead author from Korea National University of Education, advises exercising with a clean face to maintain your skin health. When sebum, dead skin cells, and other substances become trapped in pores, it can lead to blemishes.
